Magnesium carbonate is a phosphate binding agent. Phosphate binders change their anion to phosphorus and become phosphate salts in the digestive tract, which are excreted in the feces.

The better effectiveness of MgCO3 phosphate binding (compared to CaCO3) and the avoidance of increased calcium.
