Description & Specifications

Voltaire's work "Treatise on Tolerance" is one of the most important essays on religious tolerance and freedom of thought. A powerful and passionate defense of the values of freedom of conscience and religious tolerance, the "Treatise on Tolerance" was written after the wrongful accusation of the merchant from Toulouse, Jean Calas, for the murder of his son and his execution in 1762. As it became clear that Calas had been persecuted by a "rabid mob" for being Protestant, the Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire launched a campaign to restore the truth and his family. The result, an essay against fanaticism and a plea for understanding, is as relevant and urgent today as it was when it was written.
