An exciting exploration of the achievements of the RAF's photographic reconnaissance aircraft. The photographic reconnaissance (PR) versions of the Supermarine Spitfire served during World War II. Their superior performance even led the USAAF to adopt the type for the Eighth Air Force's reconnaissance needs in Europe. The PR Spitfires were responsible for some of the most significant intelligence findings of the war – from low-level oblique photographs of new German radar in France to spotting the flagship Bismarck off the Norwegian coast before attempting a breakout into the Atlantic. It is estimated that up to 80% of Allied intelligence was gathered from aerial photographs, many of which were taken by cameras installed in the PR Spitfires.
