Γενικά, τα ολικά διαλυμένα στερεά (TDS) πρέπει να είναι κάτω από τα 500 ppm ενώ πάνω από 1000 ppm θεωρείται μη ασφαλές. Επίσης, η σκληρότητα (mg/l CaCO3) είναι σημαντική, με τιμές μέχρι 500 mg/l να θεωρούνται πόσιμες, αλλά προτιμώνται οι τιμές 80-150 mg/l.
