The Concerto for Guitar by Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the most important concertos of the 20th century for classical guitar and orchestra. It was composed in 1951 and dedicated to Andrés Segovia, for whom Villa-Lobos added an extensive solo cadenza. The work combines the characteristic Brazilian rhythmic writing of the composer with lyrical and highly virtuosic sections. The first performance took place in 1956 in Houston by Andrés Segovia and the Houston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Villa-Lobos.
