Description

In the 2nd grade of Gymnasium, the subject of Geology - Geography focuses on the study of Europe and Greece, while the curriculum is developed in four major teaching units. Europe is a region where the interaction between the natural environment and humans is very intense and characteristic. This continent now constitutes the broader environment of Greek students, who should be well acquainted with its particular human-geographical characteristics. The prescribed teaching units are as follows:

Maps: Includes the application of knowledge and skills in the study of Europe, the investigation of the relative location of places, the division of maps, and their application in the study and solution of hypothetical problems (for example, in project planning).

The natural environment of Europe: Developed with the same logic described in the previous grade of Gymnasium and includes the study of characteristics, as applicable, of countries.

The inhabitants of Europe: Examines the population of Europe, its evolution over time, its geographical distribution, the political division of the continent, the major cities and their geographical distribution, as well as the geographical distribution of languages and religions. Where necessary, the lesson concludes with the examination of the specific characteristic in the Greek area (for example, population, cities, and administrative division of Greece). The unit closes with the study of the Balkan countries, which constitute the immediate surrounding area of Greece.

The economic activities of Europeans: This unit includes limited variety and extent of information about the development of various production sectors in the European area. The focus of the unit is not on listing products and quantities, but on the factors that determine the development of various economic activities. In Primary school, students learned about the shape of the Earth's surface and its division into countries, studying the world in increasingly broader regions from the local to the global. They also learned to record data and represent it with appropriate symbols. In Gymnasium, these knowledge and skills should be supplemented and expanded.
