Joshu asked Nansen: ‘What is the Path?’ Nansen replied: ‘Daily life is the Path.’ Joshu asked: ‘Can one study it?’ Nansen said: ‘If you try to study it, you will drift away, leaving it far behind you.’ Joshu asked: ‘But if I don’t study it, how will I know that it is the Path?’ Nansen said: ‘The Path does not belong to the world of perception, nor does it belong to the world of non-perception. Understanding is a delusion, and non-understanding is foolishness. If you wish to reach the true Path beyond doubt, place yourself in the same freedom as the sky. Do not call it good or not good.’
