The history of green tea in China dates back to the 8th century, and the method of preparing powdered tea from steamed dried tea leaves became popular in the 12th century. It was then that matcha was discovered by a Buddhist monk, Myoan Eisai, and brought to Japan.
Esai realized that consuming matcha improved his Zen meditation sessions. Drinking matcha not only aided the meditation efforts of the Zen monks but also became a means to achieve enlightenment itself. The sacrifice of a bowl of drink to the Buddha was part of the temple's daily practices.
A moderate form of the tea ceremony has survived to this day, and the message of beauty contained in simplicity evokes admiration even in the West. The radical simplicity was encouraged by the monk Murata Shuko, who realized that the eternal law of Buddha is revealed through the simple gesture of filling the bowl with hot water.
