Volume 35 of the New Edition of Liszt includes free arrangements made between 1842 and 1845. The transcriptions of works by Alabyev, Bulakhov, Glinka, and Wielhorsky bear witness to the composer's travels in Russia. This volume includes two operatic paraphrases on themes by Gaetano Donizetti, a recently discovered transcription by Ernst (Duke of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha), a transcription by Soriano, paraphrases on national themes and songs: Canzone Napolitana, Gaudeamus igitur, and two French songs, as well as the Grosse Konzertfantasie über spanische Weisen, which features a melody from three Spanish dances: the fandango, the cachucha, and the jota. The addition provides some of the most important early editions. An interesting feature of the volume is the first edition of the final, significantly revised version of the paraphrase Gaudeamus.
