Reading is the curse of childhood [...]. A child who reads stops thinking; all they do is read [...]. I hate books: all they do is teach us to talk about things we know nothing about. This heretical view, although belonging to Rousseau, could be said to express the opinions of many students in the modern school.
In modern society, where the pace of information is increasing rapidly, education is called upon to reshape its goals and prioritize the creation of capable readers who will be able not only to read but also to manage information. However, many children struggle to understand what they read, and this difficulty often follows them into the rest of their adult lives.
With this manual, we hope to provide educators with a tool to detect difficulties in reading comprehension that students in the 5th and 6th grades of elementary school may face, with or without reading difficulties. This tool can be utilized at two levels of analysis: a quantitative level, which primarily records and compares students' performance on this specific tool, and a qualitative level, which, in combination with scientific information on reading comprehension, highlights the difficulties students may encounter in higher-order comprehension skills based on its levels (lexical, literal (inter-sentential), intra-textual, and inter-textual comprehension levels).
This tool can also serve as a teaching process of 'appropriation' of the necessary reading comprehension strategies for better processing of a text.
