Examining humor as a sociolinguistic phenomenon, we raise questions about how it is produced by speakers. What linguistic and broader social knowledge does its functioning presuppose? In what contexts does it appear? What goals of the speakers does each instance attempt to satisfy? What effects does it have on the communication, relationships, and identities of the speakers?
How can all of this ultimately be taught, so that the ability of speakers is cultivated both to use humor to achieve their communicative goals and to understand the corresponding goals of their interlocutors?
Attempting to provide answers to these questions, this book serves as an introduction to scientific research on humor, with an emphasis on theoretical approaches from sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, as well as linguistic data from Greek.
