Post-war Polish poetry boasts three major poets: Czesław Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska, and Zbigniew Herbert. Adam Zagajewski is rightly considered their worthy successor and, until his death in 2021, was the most important poet in his country and one of the most internationally recognized.
He belonged to the renowned generation of '68, which opposed the country's communist government and its subordinate dependence on the Soviet Union. He studied psychology and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and, starting in 1982, was forced as a dissident to live for years in Berlin and Paris. He taught at several universities in the United States. He returned to Poland in 2002 and lived in Krakow until his death.
His books have been translated and published in most European countries and the USA. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 2004, the European Poetry Prize in 2010, the Zhongkun International Poetry Prize in 2013, and the Prix de la Liberté.
His poetry, contemplative and robust, ironic and self-deprecating, written in clear and unpretentious language, speaks to the fragility of existence and the need for people to defend those fundamental values without which life loses its deeper meaning.
Only in the beauty created by others is there comfort, in the music of others and in the poems of others. Only in others do you find redemption, even if loneliness has the taste of opium. Others are not hell if you see them in the morning, with their foreheads pure, washed by dreams. That is why I spend hours wondering which word to use, "he" or "you." Every "he" is a betrayal of a "you," but in return, someone else's poem offers the precision of a sober dialogue.
