How will our children learn about sex? How will they avoid lies, exaggerations, and mistakes? How can we help them become responsible in such an essential area of life? It may be surprising or even seem inappropriate for a father to talk to his daughter about sex. In the past, it would have certainly been scandalous: today, however, such a discussion is a necessary part of growing up.
The role of parents is to illuminate the path that children will follow and to provide the most and the best possible tools for their happiness. Sex remains a mystery in many ways, and we are all filled with questions: truths are obscured by cultural habits and social norms, and there are not a few prejudices.
Here we have a free discussion, a dialogue in a Socratic atmosphere, between a father-scientist and a thirteen-year-old girl: they talk about sex, love, bodily pleasure, risks, and the limits of freedom. In a culture where sex is everywhere, young people often feel lost and, as it is not easy to find answers to their questions, they improvise.
At this stage, we are called to explain to our children how things work that once were social taboos and were covered by silence and half-truths.
