Description & Specifications

Charles Arrowby, a world-famous theatrical figure, charming and narcissistic, suddenly decides to retire to a remote house by the sea. In a melodramatic manner, he declares that the time has come for him to live as a "wise elder," away from the crowd, and to write his memoirs and reflections.

However, his plans are overturned when he accidentally encounters his teenage love. Although time has not treated his old beloved kindly at all, Charles is blinded by passion and, in his struggle to win her back, becomes dangerous both to himself and to those around him.

This is the most famous novel by Iris Murdoch (1919-1999), one of "the five best English-speaking writers" (The Times). It is the work that earned her the Booker Prize in 1978.

This book is for you if…

  • You appreciate psychological retrospections through relationships and passions
  • You enjoy works with deep reflection and intense emotionality
  • You want a literary journey into loneliness, love, and personal transformation

What will it offer you?

An extensive, emotionally charged novel where the protagonist struggles with his inner identities—the person he wanted to become and the one he could not forget. The writing tenderly embraces loneliness, guilt, and the search for authenticity.

Inside the book you will find:

  • The unexpected reappearance of a melancholic love that disturbs the soul
  • A rich psychological portrait of character and relationships
  • Descriptions of a touchingly beautiful landscape by the sea that reflect inner turmoil
  • Man Booker 1978 award, recognition of a top literary work
