Occasional exaggerations in movements, gestures, facial expressions, and even tone of voice are not only permitted but are also necessary for a good interpretation of Oswald's psychology. The main difficulty of the role lies especially in how the actor can depict, visibly but not suddenly, in Oswald's secondary, rhetorical dialogues, a discrepancy between his internal mental state and his external expression – a discrepancy commonly observed in more intense and pathological neurotics. It would be a mistake to portray Oswald as continuously possessed by the awareness of his tragic fate. It would also be a mistake to depict his feelings with a highly emotional tone, a misconception that, in the opinion of theatrical critics and some of the best Ibsenic actors in European theater, has been fallen into.
