The day Nisa disappeared, we went to the mountains. All three of us wore our hiking boots and waited for the bus that goes up to the Troodos Mountains, which passes twice a day. Normally, Nisa would go out alone like every Sunday, but this time, for the first time, she decided to come along with Alice and me. Oh, how beautiful it was up there! The autumn fog mingled with the ferns, pines, and the turner oaks. These mountains emerged from the sea when the African and European tectonic plates collided. You can even see the Earth's oceanic crust. The rock formations, with their veins and layers of lava, look like they are wearing snake skin. I love thinking about beginnings. Like in that story my aunt used to tell in the backyard: When the Creator finished making the world –Stone, listen!– He dropped the clay balls that were left in his hands, and they fell into the sea, forming this island.
It moves through our world unseen. It takes care of our children, cleans our homes. We do not hear its voice. It has a story to tell. Will you listen?
Nisa has crossed entire oceans to provide a future for her child. By day, she cares for her daughter Petra. By night, she assumes the role of mother for her own little girl through the bright screen of a tablet. Nisa's lover, Giannis, is a poacher. He hunts tiny songbirds that stop in Cyprus on their way to Africa for the winter. His dreams of a new life, and of marrying Nisa, are shattered when she disappears. No one cares about the disappearance of a housekeeper, except for Petra and Giannis. As they set out to find Nisa, they realize how little they know about her. What they discover will change them completely.
Set against her homeland, Cyprus, Kristy Lefteri has created a powerful, redemptive story about loss, the triumph of the human spirit, and a mother's undying love for her child.
