The visual indicators from the company Black Diamond feature a slot for sialum, without a weight. They consist of a special clip for the line and a tube inside which sialum is placed to glow.
- The "little monkey" is usually placed between the second and third rings (guides), on the line.
- After the cast is made and the line is tightened, the indicator is pulled down, leaving slack in the line until it rests on the bottom.
- When a large fish bites, it pulls up strongly towards the rod, hits the ring, and releases.
- The line - from the rod and beyond - must be taut for the indicator to be effective.
In some cases, such as fishing for mullet, the fish may take the bait and head towards the shore, causing the indicator to not function. In this case, the "little monkey" should be placed on a tight line.
The little monkeys allow you to comfortably monitor your rods, as they "notify" you with large movements, unlike sialum which are difficult to discern and affected by the wind.
