If we start analyzing the case of the Wild Duck, nothing will come out of it. The subject, what someone says, is not very important in theater, just as in all art. What matters is how it is said. An insignificant little thing can become an eternal masterpiece when it is breathed life into by a great creative soul, just as we can remain unmoved and drowsy by the most tragic subject when it is presented to us by mediocrities.
Specifically regarding the Wild Duck, it is worth mentioning the following incident: The director of a theater, who was about to stage it, was compelled, for technical reasons, to limit its duration to two and a half hours - as it was required by certain regulations - while it actually lasts longer. For days and days he struggled, reading and re-reading, until he declared his inability: it was impossible to cut even one page from the entire play without damaging it fundamentally. Every dialogue, every phrase, every word is necessary. This only happens with great works, with fully alive creations, where if you attempt to remove anything, it will be incomplete and crippled.
