Hydraulic and partially hydroelectric energy is the energy stored as potential energy within a gravitational field. This is achieved by accumulating large quantities of water at a height from the continuing flow of free water. It is then converted into kinetic energy through water drops. The kinetic energy can either be used directly on-site (e.g., water mills), or converted into electrical or other forms that store it, ultimately allowing it to be transported over long distances.

In the Earth's water cycle, the energy mainly comes from the sun, which evaporates large amounts of water into the atmosphere. The exploitation of energy in this cycle is done through the use of hydroelectric projects such as reservoirs, dams, closed drop pipes, turbines, generators, and spillways.
