Oscar Wilde's only novel, first published in 1890, is a cleverly crafted puzzle designed to challenge conventional mindsets by exploring the numerous interactions between art, life, and consequences. From its provocative preface, urging the reader to believe in "art for art's sake," to its striking conclusion, the story self-consciously experiments with the notion of sin as a design element.
However, Wilde misjudged the repercussions of his experiment and his ability to outrage Victorian society. His words followed him into his court appearances in 1895, and he later recalled the "note of condemnation" running like "a purple thread" through his carefully cultivated prose.
