The recent socio-political, economic, and cultural conditions, along with the accompanying unimaginable scientific developments and upheavals (e.g., the expansion of knowledge, the positive and negative achievements of new technologies, the globalization of the economy, population growth, unbridled competition, the strengthening of the individual over the collective, the expansion of living standards, the development of biotechnology, genetics, and neuroscience, and the questioning of universal human values, etc.) have urgently led to the development of a new perception, a new term, Universal Design, to facilitate the individual and social lives of citizens.
In the field of education, Universal Design is reflected and implemented in the school for all (integrated school). The new trend of inclusive education refers to the effort to recognize the individual differences of each student and to utilize them in the educational-teaching process within the framework of the integrated classroom. Thus, a trend for greater interaction and osmosis between special and general education emerges and is imposed, aiming for their creative unification.
It is believed that the time and opportunity have come for Special Education to offer and exchange ideas, values, and achievements with General Education. With the integration of children with special educational needs into general education schools, general education as a whole can be enriched through joint research programs required by the new trend, with new approaches to teaching (e.g., Differentiated Instruction) with new sensitized scientists on both theoretical and practical levels, as well as new organizational-administrative and modern scientific infrastructures.
At the same time, the interdisciplinary character of Special Education helps in the dissemination of research data from one scientific branch to another, with the ultimate goal of developing the strategies and techniques that are necessary for acquiring the knowledge, skills, and the shaping of attitudes required by contemporary society.
