Discover a cosmogenesis of home designs around the world, from small huts to luxurious villas, seaside residences, and forest retreats. This innovative annual guide includes talents such as Shigeru Ban and Marcio Kogan, as well as emerging names like Aires Mateus, Xu Fu-Min, Vo Trong Nghia, Desai Chia, and Shunri Nishizawa. Homes are showcased from Australia and New Zealand, China and Vietnam, the United States and Mexico, as well as from less expected places like Ecuador and Costa Rica. The result is an extensive study of contemporary housing, revealing that homes worldwide might have more in common than expected.
Amid guava trees and abandoned forts in Western India, a retreat was designed by Kamal Malik of Malik Architecture. The House of Three Streams is a dazzling spectacle with high ceilings, terraces, and pavilions, situated atop a ridge overlooking two gorges. The Encina House by Aranguren & Gallegos, an elegant sloped structure reminiscent of a pavilion, also integrates with the surrounding view. Nestled in a pine forest north of Madrid, the lower level is built into the rock and is connected to the upper level through a natural stone wall.
The Seaside House by Shinichi Ogawa is a flawless minimalist marvel in Kanagawa overlooking the Pacific. The living space flows into a cantilevered terrace and an infinity pool, almost dissolving the line between space and sea. In Vietnam, the House in Chau Doc by Shunri Nishizawa exudes tropical elegance with exposed wooden beams, woven bamboo, plants, concrete, and interior balconies and terraces. Its corrugated metal panels serve as movable walls and shutters, adjusting views to the adjacent rice fields.
These residences—along with more than 50 others—are all highly distinctive in their design, yet they find balance between interior and exterior space, each blended with its environment.
