Through references from third parties, close friends, admirers, or rivals, a unified narrative is formed, filled with incidents from the life and daily routine of Arthur Schopenhauer, highlighting enlightening aspects of his character, as well as the core of his philosophy.
His meetings with admirers, his valuable advice to the young, walks with his little dog, and his arguments at the famous Englischer Hof hotel, where he was a regular for many years, all compose the image of a down-to-earth and inspiring teacher, whose thought is both appreciated and contested. (Unique, after all, are the pages where he takes aim against Hegel and the other idealists!)
Power, marriage, religions, philosophical systems, art, literature, and the perception of other writers are just some of the issues that occupy his thoughts.
Arthur Schopenhauer's Conversations can therefore be read either as an unofficial biography or as a brief introduction to the philosopher's work.
