Life is but a breath. Lenny, at just seventeen years old, has realized how quickly time flows – she lives in the wing for patients with terminal illnesses, with only the hospital chaplain as her friend. Thirsting for experiences in the short time she has left to live, Lenny enrolls in an arts class. There she meets eighty-three-year-old Margo, who has the heart of a rebel. They quickly become friends and discover that together they have lived a hundred years, which is the sum of their ages.
To celebrate this exciting century, their hundred shared years, they begin to paint their amazing stories: about youth and old age, love and family, about what it’s like to give joy and receive kindness, about what it’s like to lose and find people. As this last friendship deepens for Margo and Lenny, one thing becomes increasingly clear: life will continue even when the two of them are no longer "here".
“A colorful and uplifting portrait of the end of things.” Kirkus
“Cronin expertly sketches her characters, balancing with redemptive humor between sensitivity and sentimentality. Thus, she ranks among the exceptional, and few, authors who, writing about death, set up an unforgettable celebration of life.” Booklist
“A wonderful writing debut, filled with humor and tenderness; the driving force of the novel is the determination of its characters to face life’s obstacles courageously, fighting their own survival battle.” Harper’s Bazaar
“It is a pleasure to read about our inexhaustible ability to build loving relationships in the most challenging moments of life.” The Bookseller
