Description & Specifications

Many years after the death of its creator, the composite work of Dimitris Mitropoulos is experiencing a successful revival, with a series of performances, recordings, publications, and musicological studies.

The man who until recently was mentioned—almost exclusively—as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century is increasingly being recognized in recent years as the composer Dimitris Mitropoulos, as his once-overlooked yet highly significant contribution to the art of Greek music composition is now undergoing a radical reevaluation and begins to rightfully claim the prominent position it deserves.

Operating within this framework, the present study serves as the first monograph dedicated to the compositional work of Mitropoulos and specifically to his two sonatas for piano: the youthful and completely overlooked `Sonata for Piano in E-flat Major`, which additionally bears the programmatic subtitle `My Soul`, and the `Greek Sonata`, which represents the culmination of the composer’s first creative period.

The research focuses on the critical reconstruction of the history of the creation and initial reception of both works, proceeds to restore and complete the musical text of the first of the two sonatas, thoroughly engages in the analysis of the two works, and finally offers conclusions regarding the possible programmatic connotations of the older of these two compositions as well as the authenticity of the presented national character of the later `Greek Sonata`.

Thus, with the help of a multidimensional and profound analytical approach, the rapid evolution of Mitropoulos’s compositional style during the second decade of the 20th century is documented, while simultaneously highlighting his distinguished, historically prominent, and stylistically entirely unique position within the multifaceted phenomenon of the Greek National School of Music.
