I am embarrassed to write poems, an indecent occupation, flattering the reader until they say that the poem is good. I would prefer to speak in other words so that no conscious person would want to hear me.
To somewhat fill the gap that exists in Greece regarding the knowledge and dissemination of Polish literature, we took advantage of the opportunity that arose in 2011 with its proclamation as the 'Year of Miłosz' by the Polish authorities, on the occasion of the anniversary of his birth. So far, from his vast body of work, only one novel and one poetry collection have been published in Greek, however, translated from the English language.
The decision was not easy: we were quite concerned about how a charismatic and complete literary and philological personality could be presented in a book that was necessarily small in the number of pages, due to the deep economic and social crisis. Ultimately, we decided to publish in Greece the 'Last Poems,' written by Miłosz in Krakow during the last three years of his life.
Our decision is based on the fact that in these approximately forty texts of small and medium size, the poet has included the main thematic and aesthetic trends of his rich and long-standing creation. The 'Last Poems' are infused with the most significant Polish as well as universal issues that have occupied Miłosz as a poet, philosopher, historian, and philologist throughout his creative life.
