Ok, it had a plot that kept you awake. Not particularly though. Also, the writing and overall style is like watching an American movie.........for those who understand

It could have been better, but it's not bad. However, both Hole and Nesbo have spoiled us. It's definitely below the average of the series, but still a pleasant read.

The book of Nesbo with Hole that I got bored more than anything. While it creates a nice background for the villain, the rest of the story at some point tires with predictable twists

Description & Specifications

55 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE

THE BOOK WAS ON THE SHORTLIST FOR THE CWA INTERNATIONAL DAGGER AWARD IN 2009.

On a freezing night in Oslo, just before Christmas, a crowd is gathered at an outdoor concert by the Salvation Army. An explosion interrupts the music, and a uniformed officer falls dead, with a bullet to the head at close range. Harry Hole and his team have very few clues at their disposal: there is neither a suspect nor a murder weapon nor a motive. However, when the killer discovers that he has murdered the wrong person, things start to get complicated. Thanks to the intensive work of his team, Harry manages to locate the hired assassin (through credit cards, a fake passport, and communication with his employer). With no money, only six bullets in his gun, and no shelter, the assassin becomes increasingly desperate. He will do anything to eliminate his target.

THE PRESS WROTE

My pulse raced from the first to the last page. Michael Connelly, author of The Redeemer, describes Jo Nesbo's fourth novel, crafting a dark yet realistic portrait of the Norwegian capital - with drug addicts using in public, refugees falling victim to exploitation - which intertwines with a mysterious case full of twists.

The assassin is a captivating character, possessing a unique trait: his face is "super-elastic," meaning his features are so fluid that no one remembers his appearance. Nesbo's book is filled with such stunning details... I hope Harry Hole does not retire or get killed off anytime soon. Evening Standard (UK)

The troubled childhood of the assassin in war-torn Balkans adds another dimension to the already multilayered story. Its subversive evolution is truly unpredictable and proves that greed, lust, and the desire for revenge can lie even in the "holiest" members of our society. Daily Telegraph (UK)

The new Raymond Chandler. Metro (UK) Nesbo has been gradually rising on the competitive scale of Scandinavian writers with his previous books. With The Redeemer, he reaches the top, while his hero, the defiant and persistent Harry Hole, has become an extremely popular detective... Exciting surprises, tension, and a gripping atmosphere. Times (UK)

A tour de force. Nesbo's plot is so tightly woven and gripping that it will be truly impossible to put the book down. Globe and Mail (Canada)

Nesbo has found his purpose in life: to write books that you can't put down. Knack (Netherlands)

The remarkable Mr. Nesbo plays his game again but at an exceptionally high level... His novels are addictive puzzles. NRC Handelsblad (Netherlands)

Nesbo is an entire category unto himself. He is undoubtedly the leading Norwegian author of crime fiction, comparable to Americans like Corben, Connelly, Deaver, and Grisham. Bergens Tidende (Norway)

Jo Nesbo hits the mark again... He possesses the style, the suspense, and of course, Harry Hole. Thus, he delivers a top-quality crime product, The Redeemer. His narrative does not allow the reader to catch their breath until the last page. If Nesbo hasn't saved you yet, it's definitely time. Bergensavisen (Norway)

Nesbo is a master storyteller. Sydsvenskan (Sweden)

An incredibly suspenseful crime novel with several unexpected twists. I can only give it one rating: the highest. Skaraborgs Lans Tidning (Sweden)

Read an excerpt

August 1991. The stars. She was fourteen years old and certain that if she closed her eyes tightly and concentrated hard enough, she would be able to see the stars through the roof. All around her were women's breaths. Heavy, rhythmic breaths in the night. Someone was snoring. It was Aunt Sara, who had been given a mattress and was sleeping under the open window. She closed her eyes and tried to breathe like the others. It was hard to sleep, especially when everything around her was so new and different. The little forest beyond the open window and the sounds of the night here in Estgord were different too. People she knew from the gatherings at the Castle and from the summer camps, here, in a strange way, were not the same. But neither was she the same. The face and body she saw in the mirror this summer were new. And so were her feelings, those strange hot and cold currents that ran through her whole body when the boys looked at her. Or, rather, when one boy in particular looked at her. Robert. He was different this year too.

She opened her eyes again and fixed her gaze on the ceiling. She knew that God had the power to do great things, for example, to allow her to see the stars through the roof. If it was His will. The day was long, full of events. The dry summer wind made the cornfields rustle and the leaves of the trees stir nervously, casting shadows and light on the faces of those gathered in the clearing. They were listening to one of the cadets from the Salvation Army Officer School who was talking about his work and sermons in the Faroe Islands. He was handsome and his speech was full of sensitivity and passion. But she was trying to chase away a bumblebee that kept buzzing around her head and then, when the insect finally left, the heat made her drowsy.
