The essays included in this volume focus on the multifaceted relationship between the Jewish question, as well as the Jews themselves, with the Modern Greek Enlightenment and the Revolution of 1821.

Following extensive archival research that began in Greece and continued in France, Germany, Israel, and America, we have utilized unknown documents, which we publish here, and through which significant aspects of the era that had fallen into oblivion are revealed.

This is the first research step in the effort to reconsider the role, the actions, and the dynamics of the Jewish population during a period of radical changes that extends from the pre-revolutionary times and the Revolution to several decades after the establishment of the Greek state.

Through central and eccentric narratives, we discuss the multidimensional character of the process of constructing Greek identity, capturing the contribution of Jews to the Revolution of 1821, highlighting the visions of the era, and demonstrating the disillusionments that followed.

From this perspective, the thematic at hand transcends the historical context within which it is confined, revealing its unexpected relevance.
