The esteemed Athenian historian Thomas Sitaras offers us a nostalgic journey through the two-decade period of 1920-1940, capturing the atmosphere that prevailed in the neighborhoods back then, with the people, their joys, their sorrows, and their hopes.
People entertained themselves differently: theaters, neighborhood cinemas, dance schools, taverns and small eateries, nothing was missing. The women of the neighborhood with their gossip, secret desires, and passions, the street vendors and wandering performers with their tricks, the grocer, the baker, the barber, with their stories, the boisterous markets, the neighborhood kids, the café regulars and their conversations. Everything is here!
The celebrations with their now-forgotten customs and traditions, weddings and engagements, the daily struggle for survival, the longed-for tranquility – which was always missing in the midday – the distinct pre-election period, the eternally hopeless romantics and their antics.
Today’s reader is overwhelmed by a profound nostalgia for a different time, when everything flowed simply and humanely...
