Henry Morgan is a young boy in 17th century Wales when he meets a former pirate. He hangs on every word of the man and dreams of nothing else but becoming a pirate himself. Determined to follow his dream, he finds work on a merchant ship. Young Henry is deceived and becomes a slave on the ship and later sold to a plantation owner in the Caribbean. On the plantation, he becomes the master's trusted servant, is educated by him, and eventually inherits his land.
However, Henry Morgan wants to become a pirate, so he buys a fast ship and hires a crew. Now a young adult, Henry has learned management skills and knows when to be tough with his men. Thus, from 1670 onwards, the wicked and fearsome pirate Henry Morgan plunders the coasts of Cuba and America, instilling terror wherever he goes.
Henry's appetite is insatiable and he becomes increasingly violent. He plans an incredible attack against the impregnable Golden Cup – Panama. However, he is swept away by stories of the most beautiful woman ever born and fears he will go mad. Henry Morgan makes the most daring and successful attack, at great cost, and finds the woman of his dreams, who, however, cannot be taken willingly, driving him even more insane.
Quickly, everything he has achieved collapses around him. The first novel of Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck and the only historical novel he ever wrote, The Golden Cup, is written with rich, lyrical imagination. The themes of search and disappointment resonate throughout all his later works.
