The Kaliope Koufa Foundation for the Promotion of International Law and the Protection of Human Rights, as part of its activities, received funding from the European Commission for the implementation of the Jean Monnet Programme, "Dialogues on the European Union and Human Rights".

An outcome of the Programme is this three-volume collective edition that addresses critical current issues within the European dimension of human rights protection. The present first volume titled "Fundamental Rights in the European Area: Contemporary Issues and Challenges" raises concerns and explores issues related to the application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, both at the national and European levels, the protection of fundamental rights through the case law of European courts, as well as questions of democracy and the rule of law in Europe.
