Two high-precision XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, two Super ED glass elements, and a floating focus mechanism control aberration for sharp, clear images at all zoom and aperture settings.
Nano AR Coating II technology creates a uniform anti-reflective protection on the surfaces of the lenses, effectively reducing reflections and ghosting. Four Sony XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, a variable focusing mechanism, and advanced lens control achieve high-precision AF and tracking. Shoot at speeds of up to 30 frames per second with a compatible camera. A new aperture unit also contributes to high speed, with full AF tracking performance even at small aperture openings.

The aperture ring offers immediate, quick handling. The aperture ring's position-clicks can be enabled for manual control when shooting photos or disabled for smooth and silent operation when recording movies. There is also an iris lock switch that prevents unintentional rotation of the aperture ring between the [A] and F2.8 ~ F22 settings.
Two customizable focus hold buttons are provided for easy access and comfortable handling during shooting in horizontal or vertical orientation, and from almost any angle. An alternative function can be assigned to the focus hold button from the camera body menus.
