Description

The chaos of the climate crisis unfolding before our eyes; the widening gap between the rich and the poor; the intense polarization of our societies. All of these are elements that leave no room for doubt: we can no longer continue to live in the same way. The Western model of prosperity is outdated. It is imperative, as the global scientific community emphasizes, that we change our way of thinking.

In this book, influential German economist Maja Göpel calls on us to overcome our entrenched perceptions and find mechanisms through which we can simultaneously address multiple problems; mechanisms that may challenge many beliefs but will allow us, instead of passively and reactively rejecting a bleak future, to actively shape a desirable one.

Global crises in the environment and society are not mere coincidences. They reveal the way we treat ourselves and the planet we inhabit. If we want to overcome these crises, we must recognize the rules based on which we have built our economic system. Only when we fully understand them can we change them – and regain our freedom.

Read an excerpt

London, October 2019. During rush hour, two men climb onto the roof of a subway car, blocking its exit from the station. People traveling by subway to go to work find themselves in front of locked cars. And as the act of the two men gradually paralyzes the entire network, the situation on the platform becomes increasingly explosive. While some realize angrily that they will be late for their jobs, the men at the top of the train unfold a banner with the inscription "Business as usual = death," which roughly means: If we continue like this, only death awaits us.

In the case of people commuting by subway, "continuing as usual" simply means going to work; perhaps in an office or a factory; to take a position in front of a computer or a machine, to participate in a meeting, to produce or assign something; to increase turnover and profits, to contribute to development, to secure your place, and thus your existence; with the aim of paying your rent, your loans, and being able to buy something for yourself and your children. In short: to continue your life as you have known and become accustomed to.
