Description

The book is a written work by Th. Mavromoustakos and S. Despotis, Professors of Chemistry and Social Theology and Religious Studies, respectively, at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and its aim is to unite theological and scientific knowledge. It is the result of research and, of course, thorough study of the sources of Christianity from two different perspectives, always with a common concern for discovering the Truth, which liberates when one not only learns it but "shares" it (John 8:32).

The authors found that the New Testament texts contain information that can spark studies not only in Theology but also in Science. Specifically, the focus is on the Resurrections of Lazarus and the Lord Jesus Christ. Notes from the Evangelist that the dead body of Lazarus is odoriferous are substantiated due to the toxic and foul-smelling substances released from the decomposition of the dead. The resurrection of the Lord Jesus is also substantiated by John’s Gospel because the wrapped linens could not exist by themselves.

The exceptional physical-chemical attractive forces developed by the linen burial cloth, the hundred liters of myrrh and aloe mixture on the dead body of Christ, did not allow for the theft of the dead body alone. Significant effort has been made to explain the physical and possibly symbolic meaning of the numbers involved in the studied evangelical texts of the Gospel of John. The conclusion drawn is that these were not randomly placed in the texts, but represent markers of significant theological messages. The quantity expressed by these numbers is indeed crucial in drawing critical conclusions from the perspective of Chemistry.

The book is written in an accessible language so that it is understandable to every literate reader, without requiring specialized knowledge. Some minimal types of chemical compounds or some small scientific sections are certainly not crucial for understanding the text.
