Salvia pomifera (Apple-bearing Sage) is an evergreen aromatic shrub, reaching up to 1.30 meters in height. It grows in rocky, limestone, barren areas of Northern Greece, the Peloponnese, and at altitudes up to 1100 meters. It has gray color, resilient and flexible stems, and large elongated and wavy leaves.

The flowers and calyces are concentrated at the ends of the stems. The plant blooms from April to June. The name Salvia comes from the Latin verb salvare, meaning to save. Sage has been used since ancient times and is considered a sacred plant.

The ancient Greeks used it for health problems and considered it a sacred plant. The Arabs believed that sage could cure everything. It is also used in cooking as a flavoring agent.
