Description

“Whoever is born in a port is born with the journey inside them [...]. The backpack of the anthology The Eyes of the Word carries much from the journey's path; it bears the desire to kiss the feet of poetry, knowing that in the end, it will simply consume soil; it carries the golden coin that must be delivered to a small Deaf-Mute in order to gain access to the rainbow of her language.”

“It also conveys the blurry animals that the poet plucks, peels, and skins, with the insistence of wanting to see a tear at the bottom of the pot. And the obsessive quirky hand of writing, the missing companions, the insatiable hunger of mirrors, the lovers who made their eyes sing, the jungle with its guts exposed, the death that works before the eyes of the whole world, the black flour of exile and the marimbas that fly.” (From the book's introduction)

The Eyes of the Word is a selection from the poetic work of perhaps the most significant contemporary Argentine poet Jorge Boccanera, who is connected by “a navel string to Greece,” from his mother's side and his grandfather, a migrant from Samos.

“Every personal anthology,” writes Boccanera, “contains a way of composition, orchestration of language, images, concepts, flashes, and empty points within it. In this sense, The Eyes of the Word aspires to touch the depth of man, where, according to the words of the poet Bustos, ‘our voices lick the wind.’”
