Description & Specifications

Terry Eagleton, a university professor of literature and cultural theory and an expert in Marxism, explains why the rejection of religion is the root of most of our woes.

Returning to his Christian roots, he attacks the "new atheists" like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens and argues in favor of faith. Indeed, there are not many "leftist" Christians - but Christianity is "leftist" by nature: it helps the poor and the sick, speaks on behalf of those who have no voice...

Athletes, says Eagleton, have a naive idea of God and theology - the accusation of "delusion" is a misunderstanding, a generalization, an oversimplification... Before you speak out against religion, you must understand it!

"Reason, Faith, and Revolution" was not written to please everyone: alongside atheism, Eagleton comments on how the Christian church lost its reputation, how it betrayed itself again and again.

The book concludes with ideas that transcend the dilemmas of faith: is the insistence on progress a form of hubris? Is the Enlightenment to blame for the lack of spirituality that distinguishes us? And why do we refer so often to the Spanish Inquisition and so rarely to Hiroshima? Science can prove to be much more destructive than religion...

The book "stirs the waters" - of modern reason: Eagleton believes in God, not because his existence can be proven but because he feels it through experience. This experience leads to revolution: there are religious monks and religious revolutionaries; and Christian parables are reflected in the history of international revolution. Christianity is the pursuit of virtue - just like socialism.
