Review this product
  • I had heard very good reviews about this particular product. The truth is that it is the author's first attempt at a police - mystery novel. Keeping in mind the proportions, it will neither impress you nor disappoint you completely.
    +
I liked the plot (although it has some doses of exaggeration)
It has a relatively surprising ending
It contains some twists that keep the reader's interest
    -
I did not like the quite extensive description in certain parts (some chapters could have been omitted without significantly affecting the plot).
Also, the handling of the narration (chronologically) has quite a few (flashbacks) in my opinion in the wrong way. Also, the fact that everything is recorded with dates tired me to some extent.

Description & Specifications

A famous crime fiction writer, who, deciding to kill off the main character in her books, suddenly falls out of favor. A trophy husband preparing to leave her for his younger mistress. The omnipresent King and his Jester, haunting her every move. And a top inspector – in a gray and frozen city – defying all novel clichés.

Munich, 2018. Luna Marcos, a well-known author, orchestrates with the consent of her soon-to-be ex-husband his murder, in order to reignite media frenzy around her name. However, she cannot imagine that reality often surpasses imagination, as only the truth can ultimately turn into the absolute nightmare. A heinous murder drives everyone to paranoia. Nothing is as it seems and no one is innocent, while events appear to be distorted like in a funhouse mirror. Because, after all, it is the family stories – those that are "written" within four walls – that can prove to be the most terrifying of all.

A thriller about the twist that comes after the checkmate. Because, as they say, the King always dies last. Sometimes, however, he doesn’t die at all.

Read an excerpt

This was the prologue of my first book. The book that was about to launch me into the literary scene of my country overnight. The book that had found itself from the very first days of its release at the top of the sales charts in Germany – a position it held effortlessly for months – and of course the book in which Polizeioberkommissar* König**, or otherwise known as the King, was born. The one who made me and the one who destroyed me a few years later. I had not imagined this prologue. I had seen it with my own eyes. I was there, at the Oberzendling metro station, present from a safe distance in the whole scene, knowing that at any moment I wanted, I could take control of the situation, I could wake up, that is. This always happened in my dreams. Or rather in my nightmares. I had control, I knew I was dreaming and that I could interrupt them whenever I wanted, whenever I could no longer bear it. Perhaps, however, this was also the reason why in practice I never interrupted them. I saw them in full, feeling paralyzed by terror and horror, but I never gave myself the favor of waking up drenched in sweat in the middle of the night screaming, as most people probably did when they had nightmares. It was this possibility of avoidance, the "emergency exit" that ultimately urged me to remain and endure combined with the fact that in these dreams I always had the role of the observer. The one who saw and recorded everything, who felt the despair, the fear, the pain, the emptiness… of others. Always of others. Never his own.
