But what is the plot of the wretched? This can be expressed in various ways. A former convict tries to escape the law. A sinner, erased from the society of honest people, atones for his past with acts of charity and self-sacrifice. A conscience struggles to be saved from bad habits with crises and conflicts that reach dramatic peaks. A criminal takes on the task of raising and restoring a poor orphan, and this mental endeavor is carried out through unimaginable adventures. Two young beings with completely different starting points meet, separate, reunite, and end up after mortal danger in their desired union.
