This volume is the second in the series of publications of archaeological material from the Sanctuary of Koryfi at Vrysina. Its subject is the pottery from the excavation of 1972-73.
In addition to the main presentation through drawings, photographs, and descriptions, the main topics discussed include the analysis of human actions in the space, as inferred from the pottery (e.g., large collective meals), the offerings of material and immaterial goods (the ritual), and the origin of the visitors.
The way of perceiving the natural world and the social space is also derived from the ornamental decorations of the vessels with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, as well as with elements representing nature (rocks, trees, etc.).
Overall, the image of a meeting place for the local residents is depicted, from neighboring areas of the Sanctuary, who gather on the hill organized by kinship, age, or by hamlets for worship and simultaneously community purposes. Rituals are conducted, agreements and alliances are confirmed, and disputes are resolved, such as those regarding the use of water or the passage of herds.
The fragments of pottery and figurines are all that remains from these bustling gatherings, yet they are capable of providing insights into the ritual practices and the function of the Sanctuary of Koryfi as a form of early amphictyony.
