The moment had come when Pericles would rebuild the Acropolis, which had been destroyed by the Persians. Thousands of people worked on this project.
The sculptor Phidias, a close friend of Pericles, oversaw the work. At the highest point of the hill, the famous Parthenon was built, inside which stood the ivory and gold statue of the goddess Athena.
Everyone was now talking about the city of spirit and art, Athens. They named this period the Golden Age – and justly so.
