Description

Description

A complete and accurate reproduction of what is considered to be the lost historical magazine of the Greeks of Trapezus, for the first time since its original publication in 1916-17 during the temporary Russian occupation of the city in World War I.

When the aforementioned unexpectedly favorable turn of events in the flow of the war allowed the people of Trapezus to express themselves publicly in their own land without the oppressive presence of the Ottoman Muslim authorities for the first and only time in 450 years of Ottoman rule. Through its pages, the modern Greek reader becomes a participant in an immediate, contemporaneous critical perspective on the events of that dramatic era, as well as on their management by the Pontic Greek community.

It also offers the opportunity to gain a realistic understanding of the social organization, education, language, culture, and history of our compatriots from Pontus in their homeland. Additionally, readers can extract many interesting facts about the longstanding troubles that unfortunately still haunt Greek-Turkish coexistence today.

A valuable historical document, whose credibility as a primary source is strengthened by the fact that its inspirers and editors were reputable intellectuals of the Greek Community with integrity and intellectual maturity, including the talented Metropolitan of Trapezus (and later Archbishop of Athens and Academician) Chrysanthos Filippidis, who at that critical time was recognized de facto as the representative of all the inhabitants of the region.

To address any potential issues in understanding some of the magazine's content, which may reasonably arise due to the significant time gap from the original publication, it was deemed appropriate to include in this edition: An informative introduction to the historical context of the first publication, biographical details of its editors (relating to each contributor), as well as relevant photographic material.
