In "First Memories," Penelope Delta records her memories from her childhood until she is about fifteen years old. It covers the period from 1875 to 1889. Delta lived during the era of the great economic development of the Greek community in Alexandria. At that time, the Greek community was the richest and most aristocratic in Alexandria, a city with strong cosmopolitan characteristics. Therefore, her memories provide us with information about an era and a social class. At the same time, they describe the family environment and the emotions of young Penelope. We see the joys and sorrows, the thoughts and questions that the adult world provokes in a young child. The upbringing of children is strict, without hugs and tenderness. Parents do not encourage children to talk to them about their concerns and thoughts. That is why the sensitive Penelope is won over by the French teacher. However, in addition to the strictness of the parents, we also see the happy moments and funny events of childhood. We also see the often inexplicable behavior of adults, which causes questions or funny reactions in children. The description of Delta's memories stops abruptly. We do not know why it stopped, nor if she intended to continue later. Here is a simplified version of the book, suitable for foreign students learning Greek as a second/foreign language. It is mainly suitable for students at the B2 - C1 language proficiency level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe.
