Description

Description

The Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece recounts the difficult and unstable course of parliamentary life in Greece. Intense political confrontations and conflicts, genuine and fraudulent elections, foreign influences and behind-the-scenes maneuvering create this mosaic of the adventure of Greek parliamentarism, through which the protagonists and their actions emerge, sometimes as pioneers and visionaries, and at other times as negative and fateful figures.

The second volume of the Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece, which begins with the onset of the National Schism in 1915 and reaches the imposition of the Metaxas Dictatorship in 1936 and the war of '40, narrates a brief period of approximately two decades. However, it is a vibrant time during which some of the most significant events in modern Greek political history occur.

The National Schism would lead to the fateful year of 1922. The Asia Minor Catastrophe and the Trial of the Six would seal Greek political life for the following decades, introducing a third pole of power, the Army, into the Greek system. Politicians, the Crown, and the Army would become embroiled in a harsh, often limitless struggle, with the ultimate prize being power, but also the victim being democracy itself. The abolition of parliamentarism and political parties by the Metaxas Dictatorship would have a significant impact on subsequent, post-war political developments, which will be at the center of the narrative in the next, third volume of the Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece.
