Description & Specifications

From the dawn of modernism, visual and musical production have had a particularly close relationship. From Luigi Russolo's manifesto "L’Arte dei Rumori" in 1913 to Marcel Duchamp's Rotoreliefs records in 1925, the 20th century saw an increasingly fertile exchange between sounds and shapes, signs and melodies. In Francesco Spampinato's unique anthology on artistic record covers, we discover the rhythm of this cultural history. The book presents 450 covers and records from visual artists from the 1950s to the present, exploring how modernism, Pop Art, Concrete Art, postmodernism, and various forms of contemporary artistic practice have informed this parallel field of visual production. Along the way, we find Jean-Michel Basquiat's "urban hieroglyphics" for his own Tartown record label, Banksy's stencil graffiti for Blur, as well as Salvador Dalí's turned butterfly on Jackie Gleason's "Lonesome Echo." There are also detailed references and data sheets alongside the covers, listing the artist, performer, album name, record label, release year, and information about the original artwork. Interviews with Tauba Auerbach, Shepard Fairey, Kim Gordon, Christian Marclay, Albert Oehlen, and Raymond Pettibon add personal insights into the collaborative relationship between artists and musicians.
