Chamomile, or Chamomila, (Marticaria Chamemilla) derives its name from its fragrance (apple of the earth). The first to mention its beneficial properties was Hippocrates (460-370 BC), the father of Medicine, who considered it an emmenagogue and a remedy for hysteria. It is an annual herb of the Asteraceae family. The most well-known variety of chamomile that grows and thrives in the Mediterranean is Chamomilla recutita.
Chamomile has significant positive effects on organisms and helps against various ailments. Its therapeutic properties have been known since antiquity, and Hippocrates regarded it as the most miraculous herb for many cases. Scientific researchers continue to discover new information regarding the active substances and properties it contains.
