Description

Description

In this book, one will encounter hagiological and synaxarial information about Saint George, as well as a detailed presentation of the dragon-slaying motif.

The first part includes a historical description and interpretation of the Roman persecutions against Christians, focusing on the Great Persecution under Diocletian.

The second part, in addition to the Orthodox Christian synaxarion of the saint, contains references to historical sources and interpretations regarding his life and martyrdom. It also includes definitions of the nature of torture and an explanation of the "high power" of Saint George, a brief presentation of his global fame, a note on his position in Byzantine hagiography, archaeological and historical details about the Patriarchal Church in the Phanar, and Greek ethnographic elements about the Great Martyr.

The third part develops the theme of dragons and dragon-slaying, for the first time in such detail in Greek literature in a monograph about Saint George. Definitions of dragons are provided, and the dragon-slaying motif is presented through references to ancient/traditional cultures and the Bible. Additionally, this part offers religious, anthropological, and psychological interpretations.

The book concludes with two appendices, one on the life and works of Symeon the Translator and a second on the dragon-slaying hero of the border songs, Basil the Digenis.
