Ninety years after the declaration of the Greek Revolution, Kedros Publications releases the anthology of poet Ilias Gkris, 1821 in Greek Poetry. This is a selection where legendary figures and places, symbols of the Revolution of 1821, take the spotlight.

The 140 poems included were written over a span of 190 years by 109 Greek poets, with prominent figures such as Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos. Almost all the major and esteemed Greek poets are included in this collection. Many others are also mentioned in the afterword by name or are briefly presented with details of their lives and works.

As Ilias Gkris notes in the afterword, “poets needed to come as if inspired by an unwritten and intangible law to rescue and restore the language and the spirit of wisdom; to speak of the justice that was lost in the abyssal quarrels and the unbearable longing for freedom”.
