There is a wealth of diverse information about the life and works of the poet from Antiquity, much of it coming from contemporary authors as well as from his own sayings, and from epigraphic testimonies of his time or later. Due to the contradictions these pieces of information present, only a few can be considered reliable.
The main source for his life is the "Life," which has survived in many manuscripts and is dated around the end of the 2nd century BC. Biographical information about the poet is also provided by the Suda lexicon. We know the year of Sophocles’ death with greater certainty than the year of his birth. The Parian Chronicle and other sources place his death at 406/5 BC. In Aristophanes' "Frogs" (line 82), which was performed at the Lenaea of 405, and in the Muses of Phrynichus, which were also performed on the same day, Sophocles is referred to as deceased. Euripides had already died in the winter of 407/6 BC, and Sophocles mourned him in the theater. Therefore, he must have died after the Dionysia of 406 and shortly before the Lenaea of 405.
As for his year of birth, we can say with relative certainty that it was 497/6. He was born in Colonus.
