Description

Lagavulin 12 years has a complex and wonderful nose, full body, and a good balance between peat, fruit, and iodine. The high alcohol content of 54.5% makes it call for a little water, and its addition makes it smoother, tempering the bitter smoke and bringing out sweet notes of fruit, pepper, and oats.

Aging in American oak endows it with vanilla aromas, while the palate recognizes flavors of ripe fruits, such as greengages and plums, always accompanied by the peat derived from the water used in the distillery.

Excellent whiskey. On the nose, intense smoke, iodine, and surprisingly, a light citrus note (mainly lemon). On the palate, intense smoke, more than I expected (which pleasantly surprised me), iodine, vanilla, and as mentioned, lemon. Overall, with this particular whiskey, you taste exactly what you smell (except for the vanilla).
Like all 12-year-olds from the distillery, this whiskey is cask strength (whiskey that has been bottled directly from the cask without dilution or the addition of caramel color (E150) and only goes through basic filtration to remove any solids from the whiskey). For cask strength (56.5% abv.), it was quite smooth, which also pleasantly surprised me. Personally, I don't like it when the smell and taste of alcohol hit me when I go to drink a whiskey, especially if it's cask strength. In this particular one, since the smell and taste of high alcohol content were absent, I was able to fully appreciate the aroma and taste of a whiskey for which I paid a considerable amount (140 euros).
Another plus is the presentation of this bottle, something that I don't think many can argue about. Beautiful art, and of course, I found it extremely interesting that behind the bottle, you are given the opportunity to scan a barcode that directs you to an official Diageo page where the myth of this particular lion is narrated, which has been a symbol of the distillery for years. Fun fact: the 9-year-old Lagavulin (Game of Thrones edition) represented House Lannister, as their symbol was a lion.
The only downside (not personally for me, but I imagine for the average consumer) is the price of the bottle, which ranges from 135-150 euros. On the other hand, before someone considers buying it, it would be good to consider that this particular bottle is part of a limited edition series, so it was expected for the price to be steep because, apart from being a whiskey as a whiskey, the bottle was also made with the intention of becoming part of a collector's collection.
Having tried the 8-year-old and of course the 16-year-old, this one is my favorite out of the three.
